Enjoy Thermal Baths & Spas in Budapest like a local 2024

OK, you’ve visited the Cathedral, all the bridges, Gellért Hill, the Parliament and your body is starting to tell you that if you’re planning to visit anything else, don’t count on it. Now what do we do?

We bring you the perfect plan to give you a break but, at the same time, continue discovering corners and monuments of Budapest, the pearl of the Danube.

We are sure that, although you are enjoying the city, you would love to enjoy a moment of peace and quiet. Wish granted. We bring you a complete list of thermal baths where you can give your body and mind a restorative break.

What’s so special about this list of thermal baths? The number of people you will find in them. These are places designed for the enjoyment of the inhabitants of Budapest, away, as far as possible, from tourists. You’ll find a great mix of locals and tourists, but no crowded places with sky-high prices. Enjoy the best thermal baths frequented by locals.

Paskál Baths

Egressy út 178/F, 1141

It is not the best known, not the busiest, not the biggest and maybe not the most beautiful, which is difficult when you have to compete with Széchenyi and Gellért, but it can be proud to be the youngest spa on the list and practically the youngest in the city.

It opened its doors in 1989 and its design can confirm that it is the most recently opened thermal bath in the spa town. It has nine pools in total, counting all the indoor and outdoor pools.

It is designed to meet all the needs of the hundreds of visitors who come here every month. Designed for families and citizens of the city of Budapest, it was renovated in 2016 in response to a great local demand for new facilities.

Irgalmasok Veli Bej Bath

Árpád fejedelem útja 7, 1023

Veli Bej may be the best known option on the list. You can find this thermal bath on other lists, such as those naming the best spas in the city, and no wonder.

It is one of the oldest spas in the city, and within its walls you can enjoy the grandeur and luxury of a bygone era, but one that retains all the grandeur of the Turkish Empire. Its decoration will transport you to another time.

You might have to search a little to find it well, as it is somewhat hidden from the naked eye of tourists. There you can enjoy a Kneipp walking pool, as well as a sauna, jacuzzi and the jewel in the crown, its classic Turkish octagonal-shaped pool, under a vault where colours filter through to make your visit an unforgettable experience.

Dandár Thermal Bath

Dandár u. 7, 1095

Beauty and tranquillity await you in Dandár, as we promised at the beginning of the post. The beauty you will see has nothing to do with the complex architecture of spas like Gellért.

Built in 1930, after undergoing numerous renovations and improvements, today we can enjoy medical pools, those with a higher concentration of minerals and uses more focused on pain relief than leisure, cold pools and sauna among other facilities.

Something that you do not expect, and that is going to be a key feature of your visit, is its proximity to the Unicum factory. If you don’t know what the Unicum is, it’s about time you found out if you are thinking of coming to Budapest or if you are already here.

Unicum is a typical herbal liqueur in Hungarian gastronomy. It is used for almost everything, from an aperitif to a home remedy for a cold. If you want to know if it’s effective or not, you’re going to have to try it yourself.

Palatinus Thermal Bath

Soó Rezső stny. 1, 1003 (On Margaret Island)

Palatinus does not bring as much peace as the previous spas, however, it promises a lot of fun and swimming pools, many swimming pools.

Open since 1919, it has undergone numerous renovations since then to the present day. In 1921 a wave pool was added, in 1975 outdoor pools, in 2002 the water circulating equipment in addition to the improvements in 2017.

Always at the forefront, without fear of improving, it offers an endless number of swimming pools, a leisure area for families, an outdoor spa, a wave pool, and much more.

Would you like to be taken care of while the rest of the family enjoys the slides? Let yourself be loved by the expert hands of the massage therapists that Palatinus puts at your disposal. What more could you need?

Római Baths

Rozgonyi Piroska utca 2,1031

Római, more than a thermal bath itself, is a whole complex. Archaeological remains are mixed in the area, which tell a great story about the City of Spas, as well as impressive nature that can also be seen in its thermal baths.

The Római Fürdő thermal baths as such were opened for the use and enjoyment of citizens in 1930. As was the case with Palatinus, its facilities are designed for the whole family, which is why it has, among others, a children’s pool, another for chilling with neck showers, saunas and steam cabins.

It currently has a size of 4.83 hectares, which can give you an idea of what a great spa it is, in a completely privileged area. A sanctuary for body and mind.
