Széchenyi Baths
Állatkerti krt. 9-11
Let’s start where we really have to start, the biggest, the best known, the most popular: Széchenyi. Its 21 pools, if we add all the indoor and outdoor pools together, receive an average of one million tourists a year.
In operation since its opening in 1913, Széchenyi represents all the grandeur and luxury of Budapest’s thermal baths. It is an institution in itself, a place that should be on every sightseeing tour.
That is precisely what brings it to this list. Its interior, pools and hot springs are the reason for its existence, but its exterior and structural beauty is what makes it the monument we want you to visit without any excuses.
Gellért Baths
XI. Kelenhegyi út 4-6
At the top of this list, as of any other, be it the best thermal baths, the most beautiful or the most popular, we will find another of the great jewels of Hungarian architecture and culture; Gellért Baths.
A clear exponent of the Art Nouveau and Modernist architectural styles and built in 1918, its sculptures, mosaics, vaults and incredible exteriors and interiors will make you seriously consider coming back again and again.
Its highlight? Without a doubt, at least for us, its main pool, which is surrounded by old columns, terraces at the top and an immense vault that lets in the light of day and allow you to see the stars at night.
Rudas
9 Döbrentei tér
With almost 500 years of history and perfectly in sync with nature, we find the imposing Rudas thermal bath on the banks of the Danube.
Although the fact that it has seven pools, from 16 to 40 degrees, hammam and saunas, may not surprise you too much, the environment in which they are located and their decoration are what make them unique places in the whole city.
However, if what you want is access to the best of the best in one of the most beautiful places in the city, get ready because it’s going to become your favourite.
If you’re more of an indoor pool person, don’t hesitate and head for the octagonal swimming pool, on top of which there is an immense and colourful Turkish ten-metre dome. They have a rooftop Jacuzzi from where you can enjoy of the superb views of the Pest skyline.
Rudas Bath opens from 6:00 to 20:00, on Fridays and Saturdays it opens exceptionally from 22:00 to 3:00 so you can enjoy all of this at night too.
