Have Breakfast like a local
Don’t think that breakfast is just drinking some coffee or juice and some bread and butter. That’s not the end of it, there’s a whole world behind the breakfast culture.
Even if you are a non-breakfast eater, when you travel you should open your mind and your stomach to a whole cultural and culinary journey. From early in the morning you must be prepared to be a true Hungarian if you want to enjoy Budapest as it deserves.
So wash your face, brush your teeth and start reading because we are going to give you the keys to enjoy a real Hungarian breakfast, as if you were born in Budapest itself.
In addition, you need to eat well from first thing in the morning if you want to make the most of your weekend in Budapest, as well as the bars near Giselle.
Traditional Hungarian breakfasts
We start with what you can’t miss on the table if you want to feel more Hungarian than Unicum and Pálinka put together. We’re talking about everything from typical bread to drinks and spreads.
Bundás kenyér
Let’s start with the bread. It’s not just any bread, it’s a type of French toast that usually has ham and cheese, although you can put anything on it, even some of the creams we’re going to see now.
Körözött
With a heart of paprika, the national spice, this cream cheese and onion spread is a regular on Hungarian tables. Remove the paparika and you get a Hagymás túrókrém, and even if you remove only one element, its taste changes completely. Which one is better? That’s for you to decide.
Tepertőkrém
One of the best known Hungarian dishes. So much so, that if you know anyone local here, they might tell you that this flavour takes them back to moments from their childhood. It is a simple recipe that is easy to make and very popular with everyone. Pork and onion are the main ingredients.
Paraszt reggeli
Are you one of those people who try everything when you travel, when it’s time to have breakfast and try a bit of everything? How would you like to start the day with THE omelette?
We didn’t say an omelette, but THE omelette, because this is the ultimate super omelette. Made with bacon, onion, a Hungarian sausage called kolbász, among other ingredients, it will revolutionise your taste buds.
Lekváros bukta
Bread roll filled, on many occasions, with different flavours of jam. It can also be filled with ham and cheese or minced meat, although the best accompaniment is the túró, a cottage cheese. Something similar, although smaller in size, can be found in the Pogácsa. This little roll is filled with chicken or cheese and is often covered with seeds.
And to accompany all this, what can you drink? Leave the water for all the great spas in Budapest. Your breakfast, if you want to remain an authentic Hungarian, should be accompanied by coffee with milk or black coffee, although they are also fond of tea and have many flavours and types.
