I love Budapest, but one of its underrated advantages is how easy it is to leave it for a day.

The best day trips from Budapest can take me from cobbled artists’ streets to medieval castles, vineyards and the shores of Central Europe’s largest lake. Hungary is compact enough that I can have breakfast in Budapest, spend the afternoon somewhere completely different and still return to the capital for dinner.

Better yet, I don’t always need a car. Several excellent destinations can be reached by public transport, which means I can concentrate on the scenery rather than attempting to understand Hungarian road signs.

Here are the destinations I would put at the top of my list.

Top Destinations for Day Trips from Budapest

For an easy first excursion, I would start with Szentendre. It’s close, pretty and simple to reach.

For summer scenery, Lake Balaton gives me water, vineyards and resort towns. If history and wine sound more tempting, I head northeast to Eger.

And when I want dramatic Danube views and medieval architecture, the Danube Bend is difficult to beat.

Szentendre: The Easiest Escape from Budapest

If I wake up in Budapest and spontaneously decide I need cobblestones, colourful façades and riverside cafés, Szentendre is my answer.

This small town sits north of Budapest beside the Danube and is known for its Serbian heritage, churches, galleries and long artistic tradition. Its historic centre is wonderfully walkable, so I don’t need a complicated itinerary.

I wander around the main square, explore the narrow lanes, visit a gallery or museum and eventually find somewhere for coffee and cake. This last step somehow appears in most of my itineraries.

Szentendre is particularly easy to reach using the suburban HÉV railway from Batthyány Square. The journey takes roughly 40 minutes, making this one of the simplest excursions from Budapest.

During the warmer season, scheduled boats can also provide a scenic alternative along the Danube.

Perfect for: art, photography, cafés and a relaxed half-day or full-day trip.

Lake Balaton: Hungary’s Great Summer Escape

Lake Balaton feels like Budapest’s collective answer to the question, “Where should we go when it gets hot?”

Often called the Hungarian Sea, Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe and one of Hungary’s major holiday regions. Its shores combine beaches, historic towns, vineyards, cycling routes and water sports.

For a day trip, I wouldn’t attempt to “see Lake Balaton.” It’s enormous. Instead, I choose one destination.

Balatonfüred is excellent for promenades, cafés and an elegant resort atmosphere. Tihany offers beautiful views, traditional architecture and its famous abbey. If wine is the priority, the volcanic landscapes around Badacsony are particularly tempting.

Balaton is at its liveliest in summer, although hiking, wine, gastronomy and cultural attractions make the region increasingly interesting outside peak season too.

Perfect for: summer trips, lake views, wine, swimming and romantic escapes.

Eger: Castles, Baroque Streets and Hungarian Wine

Some day trips are about scenery. Eger gives me scenery and wine, which feels remarkably efficient.

The historic city northeast of Budapest is famous for Eger Castle, beautiful Baroque architecture, thermal traditions and one of Hungary’s best-known wine regions.

I usually start around DobĂł Square and wander through the historic centre before visiting the castle. Eger played an important role in Hungarian history, particularly during the famous 1552 Ottoman siege.

Then there is the Valley of the Beautiful Woman, known in Hungarian as SzĂ©passzony-völgy. The area is filled with wine cellars and is the obvious place to discover local wines, including the famous Egri BikavĂ©r, or Bull’s Blood.

There are around 200 wine cellars in the valley, so I accept immediately that “trying all of them” is not a sensible day-trip objective.

Perfect for: history, wine lovers, architecture and food.

Visegrád: Medieval Hungary with a View

When I want castles and dramatic landscapes, I head towards Visegrád in the Danube Bend.

The town is associated with Hungary’s medieval royal history and is best known for its hilltop citadel. The reason I make the climb becomes obvious once I reach the viewpoints: the Danube curves spectacularly through the surrounding hills below.

Visegrád also has the remains of the Royal Palace associated with King Matthias Corvinus, making the town a great option if Hungarian history is high on my list.

I would wear comfortable shoes. Medieval kings apparently did not design their castles around my preference for flat, effortless sightseeing.

Perfect for: castles, panoramic views, hiking and history.

Esztergom: Hungary’s Monumental Basilica

Another excellent Danube Bend destination is Esztergom, historically one of Hungary’s most important cities.

Its enormous basilica dominates the skyline above the Danube and is Hungary’s largest religious building. The location is particularly impressive because the river here forms the border with Slovakia.

That means I can walk across the Maria Valeria Bridge and technically visit another country before lunch — an unnecessarily satisfying addition to a day trip.

Esztergom works especially well as part of a longer Danube Bend excursion combined with Visegrád or Szentendre.

Perfect for: architecture, Hungarian history and Danube scenery.

Which Budapest Day Trip Should I Choose?

  • For an easy first trip: choose Szentendre.
  • For summer: head to Lake Balaton.
  • For wine and history: spend the day in Eger.
  • For castles and viewpoints: visit Visegrád.
  • For monumental architecture: explore Esztergom.

I also consider the season. Balaton shines during warm weather, while Eger and Szentendre work beautifully for much of the year. Autumn can be especially lovely in Hungary’s wine regions and the wooded Danube Bend.

My Tips for Day Trips from Budapest

  1. Leave early: especially if you’re travelling beyond Szentendre.
  2. Check transport schedules: weekend and holiday timetables can differ.
  3. Don’t overplan: one destination explored properly is better than three seen through a bus window.
  4. Wear comfortable shoes: cobblestones, hills and castles appear suspiciously often on this list.
  5. Check seasonal opening hours: boats, attractions and smaller businesses may operate differently outside summer.

Ready to Explore Beyond Budapest?

The best day trips from Budapest prove that Hungary has much more to discover beyond its capital. Szentendre gives me art and colourful streets, Lake Balaton brings lakeside relaxation, Eger combines history with wine, and the Danube Bend delivers some of the country’s most beautiful scenery.

My advice is to keep at least one day of your Budapest itinerary flexible. Pick the destination that matches your mood, leave the city after breakfast and see where Hungary takes you.
